Controls Project Engineer, MI

Summary: The Controls Project Engineer is responsible for the Design, Documentation, and overseeing Programming, and the building of custom Robotic Automation Systems. This position requires a strong technical ability in the fields of controls and electrical design and is for a motivated individual who enjoys a variety of responsibility. A drive to learn and expand skills and responsibilities is a must.

Pay: $40.00-$55.00

Essential Functions:

  • Documentation of electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and cooling systems (i.e.: schematics, ladder diagrams, etc.)
  • Analyze proposal product, equipment, customer specifications and process requirements to conceive and produce a practical controls design within the limitations defined by cost, time and the availability of equipment or components.
  • Work with other members of the control systems design department and other groups to continuously improve methods of integrating controls technology, with the goals being enhanced safety, enhanced functionality, and reduced cost
  • Assist in the establishment of controls standards for new designs or modifications to the controls of existing equipment or process when required.
  • Develop controls designs, both hardware and software, that are compliant with customer specifications and industry standards.
  • Assist in the De-bugging of the control’s functions, after assembly to ensure programs met engineering criteria.
  • System design and specification including bill of materials, wiring schematics, programming, simulation, testing, installation, start-up, debugging and troubleshooting of equipment and systems.
  • Knowledge of standard industrial panel designs and components
  • Ability to interact professionally with other departments, customers and suppliers
  • Other functions as assigned by Management.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Required minimum 5 years’ experience with AutoCAD
  • Experience with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.)
  • Experience with Fieldbus technologies (ex: Ethernet, IOLink)
  • Experience using PLC and HMI development tools including RSLogix 5000, Studio 5000 Logix Designer, and FactoryTalk View Studio.
  • Experience with Risk Assessments and Lock Out/Tag Out
  • Standard industrial panel designs & components
  • Wiring methods
  • Power distribution wiring
  • Communications layout
  • Voltage levels and types and their isolation
  • Component sizing and wiring
  • Capable of reading electrical drawings in JIC as well as IEC standards
  • Machine labeling syntax of electrical wiring, components, hoses, etc. and how to document this information in the schematics
  • Interfacing and communication with devices; analog, fieldbus, etc. 

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 5 years of direct industry experience.
  • Experience in Controls Estimating and Controls Build
  • Understand and able to apply CE, UL, NFPA, RIA, etc. electrical requirements and standards to designs
  • Knowledge of electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic schematics and how these systems interact
  • Familiarity with interfacing to and programming FANUC, ABB, and KUKA robots.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Organizational skills and the ability to multi-task, taking on several projects at once.
  • Ability to analyze problems, specify and implement solutions.
  • Requires excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to find ways to work under pressure and still make deadlines without cutting corners or endangering the integrity of the equipment and/or the employer as a whole.
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently with minimal supervision
  • Willingness to participate in internal training to expand technical background
  • Willing to travel locally and long-distance to customer sites when needed 

Working Conditions:

  • Must be able to work in a professional office environment as well as a manufacturing environment
  • Expectation of an average of 45 - 50 hours per week
  • Ability to travel up to 15%
  • May be exposed to moving mechanical equipment, airborne particles, and occasionally chemical fumes.
  • The noise level within the manufacturing floor may be faint to moderate, and occasionally loud.
  • Eyewear is mandatory while in the manufacturing area
  • Safety shoes such as hard soled shoes are to be worn in the manufacturing area
  • Must be able to work overtime when required as job permits 

Physical Demands:

  • Must be able to sit/stand for long periods of time if necessary
  • Must be able to bend, and lift objects up to 35 pounds if required
